Red Hook Crit Brooklyn No9
The Red Hook Crit is the biggest fixed gear race in the world. Each year Team iBike and other crews from MTL travel down to NYC for the race and a weekend in NY. Every year the organization gets bigger, the race gets faster and the consequences more real. Hundredths of seconds separate the men’s qualification times meaning even the slightest mistake can mean missing the 85 rider cut off. Carole Poole and Corinne Helbig almost reached their goal of not being lapped in the finals.
Nicolas Cote was the top qualifying rider on the men’s side at 102nd overall, putting him the last chance race where he DNF due to another rider crashing in front of him. It is high stakes race, in an energy filled city.
It’s not a weekend to relax it’s a weekend to get jacked. For the second year in a row the Vélo iBike crew were in charge of the Parc Fermé checking all bikes before riders were allowed onto the course. We would like to send out a huge thanks to all those that helped in the cause and were there to cheer. These efforts are the ones that build a community. The Fixed gear crit scene is alive and well and won’t be stopped by a crash. Thanks to Gopherette Power for the pictures.
